Owned by the Bureau of Reclamation and leased by the Kern County Parks Division, Lake Woollomes is an equalizing reservoir for the Friant-Kern Canal, which is used for irrigation of the surrounding fields. The waters attract as many ducks, geese and other waterfowl as people. The surrounding area includes almond groves and grape vineyards.

The entire Lake Woollomes Park occupies 455 acres, the lake with its four mile shoreline covering 300 of those acres.
